Transport 2000 Prairie is a regional association comprised of members in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta that believe in public transportation that is environmentally, socially and economically stable. We believe there are connections between transportation and climate change, the environment, public health, the Canadian economy, social justice, and urban planning. Our organization builds partnerships with other organizations that share our concerns. Western members (including Transport 2000 B.C.) receive a Western Newsletter that is published quarterly.

THE ISSUES

·        ENVIRONMENT for inter-city travel, rail is the most environmentally benign mode. Bus is next. Transportation alternatives to cars and short-haul airplanes are essential to combating the climate change crisis.

·        ENERGY most transportation depends on fast-diminishing supplies of fossil fuels, and accounts for over half of Canada's petroleum use (factoring in the manufacture of vehicles). Walking, cycling, transit, then rail and bus are the most efficient modes. The car and short-haul aviation are least energy-efficient.

·        ECONOMY our taxes pay for roads. Ever-increasing car and truck traffic and sprawling development raise the cost of road maintenance, policing, service delivery, and health care. Good public transportation is good economics.

·        SOCIAL EQUITY Transportation choice should be affordable and accessible for everyone - an essential service

·        LAND USE Planning to promote public transit, cycling and walk ability, will create livable, healthy communities by limiting sprawl.

TRANSPORT 2000 PRAIRIE IS WORKING FOR THE FOLLOWING GOALS:

1. Improved service, affordability, accessibility and use of urban public transit - "an essential service"

2. Safety and convenience for pedestrian and cycling transportation

3. Enhancement of rural bus transportation

4. Restoration of VIA passenger rail across the southern prairies

5. Upgrading of current VIA rail service

6. Practical access for people with disabilities in every mode of transportation

7. Alternatives to the private car

8 More freight by rail instead of by road

9 Benefits to the economy, social fabric and environment:

• Reduced climate upheaval, pollution, massive resources used in car manufacture and infrastructure

• More respectful and health-giving use of the land.

10. User participation in transportation planning at municipal, provincial and federal levels.
